Motorola MTM5200: a guide to the 380–430 MHz vehicle-mounted TETRA radio

The MTM5200 is designed for an in-car workspace or other agreed installation option. In our catalogue there is a set of variant 380-430 MHz. Consider what the vehicle-mounted terminal adds to the crew and what properties of a particular model are important to consider when choosing.

The role of the station in the car

The vehicle-mounted device remains fixed in the workplace, using an external antenna and a separate power supply. The driver does not need to organize communication through the handheld terminal lying in the cabin. The control panel and audio equipment can be placed under the tasks of the crew, retaining access to the desired groups and messages.

In TMO mode, the MTM5200 works as a subscriber of the TETRA network. Its registration, authorized services and interaction with the control room require agreement with the operator. The 380-430 MHz range presented here is relevant to our proposal; other MTM5000 ranges do not mean that one machine covers them all.

Three parameters that are often confused

ParameterImportance for MTM5200
Transmitter powerVersion 3 W; 10 W performance of other MTM5000 models cannot be carried over to MTM5200
Power supply range10.8–15.6 V DC according to manufacturer specification; direct power supply from 24 V goes beyond it
Dynamics 13 WThis is the external speaker in our proposal; this is not the radio frequency power of the station.

Remote antenna and its placement affect radio communication together with feeder, relief and infrastructure. The comparison of 3 W with the power of a handheld terminal does not guarantee operation at a specific distance. For the route, it is more important to confirm the passage of the call in both directions with the actual antenna installed.

Management and data

When choosing a workplace, it is estimated whether the names of groups are visible from the usual driver position, whether it is convenient to use the hand microphone and whether the message is heard in noise. The photo in the card shows the station with the front panel, but does not confirm the remote set or the characteristics of another control unit.

The family supports voice and data services. Coordinates, statuses and messages should be available in the proposed configuration and accepted by the desired application. Motorola describes a TEDS-ready hardware platform with a software update under license: it is not a promise to turn on TEDS or the specific speed of each delivery.

For secure services, the agreed terminal and network configuration is also checked. Support for encryption in the documentation and the readiness of a particular device to work with the customer’s system are different issues. Conditions of necessary services are included in the reception along with the usual voice calls.

Why the MTM5200 is not a gateway

In the manufacturer’s documentation, the MTM5200 differs from models with built-in DMO/TMO gateway and DMO-repeater: it does not have such functions. Therefore, the scheme “the machine automatically transmits the conversation handheld employee to the network” should not be the reason for buying this model.

Working together with the MTP6550 means that terminals can be separate subscribers to the same workgroups after configuration and verification. Direct DMO is another consistent mode. If the project requires an intermediate gateway, select a separate appropriate solution and check the entire scheme.

What to agree on the set

Our description of the MTM5200 lists a magnetically based antenna, a power supply cable of 6 m, a bracket with a lock, a microphone, a 13 W external speaker with an additional cable, and a brief guide. This is the basis of the delivery discussion; other agreed components or work may be needed for a particular machine.

On the Motorola EMEA page, the model is marked as discontinued. Current availability, condition and physical composition are confirmed in the proposal. Below is the MTM5200 card and the handheld MTP6550: they allow you to start the selection from the right workplace without mixing the capabilities of different models of the line.

Questions before ordering

Does the MTM5200 have a 13 W transmitter?

Nope. The MTM5200 is described by the manufacturer as version 3 W. 13 W in our kit refers to an external speaker.

Can the station be powered directly from 24V?

Passport range is 10.8–15.6 V DC. For 24V transport, a suitable power supply and connection set are selected separately.

Is the MTM5200 a built-in gateway for handheld two-way radio?

Nope. This model does not function as an integrated DMO/TMO gateway or DMO-repeater; this is done with the appropriate individual equipment.
