Replacing older vehicle-mounted TETRA radios with MTM5200: a pilot and fleet upgrade
Update vehicle-mounted communication affects the station, its installation and crew. The MTM5200 is worth considering after comparing it to the actual features of the previous hardware. A pilot on a single car helps confirm compatibility and plan the next batch without promises of direct replacement of any vehicle.

Describe the current workplace
Collect the full designation of the old station, the control panel option, the range and the list of services used. Not only conversational groups are important: the device could act as a gateway, work with a separate display or connect to special equipment. These functions influence the choice of the next model.
Separately note the installation: the voltage of the car, the placement of the unit, the antenna track, the microphone and the speaker. Keeping a neat existing installation is convenient, but a similar case does not yet confirm the compatibility of the bracket, power supply or connectors. This decision is made after inspection and verification of documentation.
The limits of the MTM5200
| Requirement of the former workplace | What to compare with the MTM5200 |
|---|---|
| Network frequencies | Our quotation applies to configuration 380-430 MHz; the range of the previous station is checked by its marking. |
| Transmitter power | MTM5200 - version 3 W, without automatic transfer of parameters of more powerful models |
| power supply | 10.8–15.6 V DC input; 24 V installation requires separate power supply solution |
| Built-in gateway or repeater | The MTM5200 does not function as a built-in DMO/TMO gateway or DMO repeater. |
If the previous vehicle-mounted radio acted as a gateway for handheld radios outside network coverage, the MTM5200 cannot replace it in that role. The system configuration must then be reviewed. Successful TETRA network registration does not compensate for a missing gateway function.
Prepare settings with the operator
The Administrator is provided with a list of workgroups, individual calls, messages and required protected services. For the proposed version, it confirms registration and suitable parameters. An old settings file is useful as a description of an existing task, but it cannot be considered a universal file for another model.
Each machine retains the agreed designation of the workplace, and the terminal is assigned the correct individual data. If you need TEDS, coordinates, or certain secure services, check the availability of features and system support. Such features should not be considered included simply because they occur in the family documentation.
Pilot vehicle and testable results
For the pilot, choose the typical transport and route where the crew actually works. After editing, check the conversation with the dispatcher and previous terminals in the main groups. Comparisons are made in both directions; the signal level on the screen does not replace the confirmed conversation.
Additional services are tested by separate scenarios. Coordinates should be included in the desired application, messages should be received by the addressee. The emergency function is checked in concert, including indication and termination. For DMOs, they record their own parameters and results, since network and direct modes perform different tasks.
What to transfer to the next batch
After acceptance, retain the composition of the installation, the agreed settings and the test protocol. Similar machines are prepared according to them, separately noting the differences in power supply, body and working route. For the transition period, a reserve and a procedure for returning to the previous workplace should a problem be detected.
A phased update is possible after confirmation of joint work. It does not guarantee in advance that the infrastructure will not require any changes or that the transition will take place without interruption. Priority is agreed with the operation of the transport and the network operator, and the old stations are removed after the adopted replacement.
Composition of the replacement proposal
Our description of the MTM5200 includes a magnetic car antenna, a power supply cable of 6 m, a bracket with a lock, a microphone and a 13 W external speaker with a cable. The list is compared with the installation task, condition and current availability. The Motorola EMEA page marks the model as discontinued; maintenance and accessories are discussed separately.
Use the MTM5200 listing below to request a specific kit. If handheld equipment is also being upgraded, list the MTP6550 separately and check its compatibility and the user’s role independently.
Obtaining equipment
Specify the city of receipt: Perm, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, Pavlodar or other point of Russia and Kazakhstan. Delivery composition, available quantity, cost and terms are agreed for your order.
Questions before ordering
Can you replace any vehicle-mounted TETRA with the MTM5200?
Nope. Compare range, services, power supply, installation and the role of the old machine. The MTM5200 does not replace the built-in gateway or repeater for this function.
Do I need to update all the machines at the same time?
The order can be divided into parties after the accepted pilot and confirmation of joint work. For the transition period, the reserve and actions in case of refusals are agreed.
Will all the protected services of the previous station be maintained?
This is checked by the capabilities of the proposed instance, licenses, settings and network requirements. The general designation TETRA is not enough.
