Motorola MTP6550: a handheld TETRA terminal for workgroups
The MTP6550 is selected for an employee who needs to be in touch while walking, inspecting equipment or working outside the cabin. The value of such a terminal is determined by its place in the TETRA network: workgroups, subscriber rights and how the call is received by the dispatcher. Let us examine the possibilities of the model and the conditions of their use.

Where the handheld terminal is beneficial
At the enterprise, one shift can combine transport, equipment maintenance and site staff. These employees have different routes, but they need an agreed-upon communication procedure. The MTP6550 allows you to have a terminal with you, select a designated group, and remain available after you leave the vehicle. This is a convenient option for extending the existing TETRA fleet if the operator has confirmed the compatibility of a particular configuration.
Buying a separate device does not create a control network. To work through the terminal infrastructure, registration, authorized services and a prepared configuration are required. If the enterprise only chooses a standard, first define the areas of operation and the required order of calls, then compare the TETRA project with the appropriate DMR system.
What is known about the model
| Parameter | How to understand when choosing |
|---|---|
| Range 350–470 MHz | MTP6550; variant and frequencies of a particular terminal are verified separately |
| Power classes | Documentation indicates 1 W, class 4, and 1.8 W, class 3L; availability of 3L is checked for proposed apparatus |
| Battery 1650 mAh | Described by the manufacturer in our proposal; capacity does not mean the same duration of any shift |
| GPS, Bluetooth, Man Down | Model support does not confirm included features, licenses, and integration of a particular instance |
Different versions of the documentation have differences in characteristics and available options. Therefore, the protection class, the software version and additional functions are fixed according to the proposed configuration. The photo helps to know the model, but does not prove the status of the battery, the presence of licenses or the full composition of the physical kit.
How an employee works at TMO and DMO
In TMO mode, communication passes through the TETRA network. The list of groups and services is set in conjunction with the operator: the employee needs clear names and the correct group to answer. Scanning of other groups, individual calls and messages are used according to configured rights, not only with the capabilities of the terminal menu.
DMO provides direct communication between compatible terminals. Agree on the frequencies, talkgroups and procedure for entering this mode in advance. Loss of network coverage does not mean that the radio will automatically reach a remote control room. Test direct calls between staff at their actual operating locations.
Additional functions for the work task
GPS is useful when the dispatcher’s application actually receives the coordinates. Man Down can trigger an alarm under configured tilt or inactivity conditions; this feature requires licensing and configuration. Check that any Bluetooth accessory is compatible and approved for use. Include the required features in the supply specification and test them on a trial terminal.
Separately assess the convenience of work: the availability of buttons in gloves, audibility of the call, mounting on clothes and actions with a headset. Belonging to the previous series can not be considered compatible only with a similar connector. The battery, charger and audio accessories require confirmation of the appropriate item.
Set and maintenance
Our MTP6550 proposal describes a flexible antenna, a 1650 mAh battery, a soft leather case, a charger and a brief guide. Composition, condition and availability are agreed in the current proposal. Motorola notes the discontinuation of production of the model; this makes it particularly useful to discuss maintenance and compatible accessories prior to purchase.
For the crew, the handheld terminal can be supplemented with the MTM5200 in the vehicle. The person and the machine will have separate subscriber credentials, even if they work in common groups. Below are the cards of both terminals: start with the appropriate role and report the parameters of the existing network for selection.
Obtaining equipment
Specify the city of receipt: Moscow, St. Petersburg (Peter), Yekaterinburg, Almaty or another point of Russia and Kazakhstan. Delivery composition, available quantity, cost and terms are agreed for your order.
Questions before ordering
Is the MTP6550 suitable for any TETRA network?
Convergence of the standard is not enough. Check frequency configuration, registration, software version and necessary services with the operator of a particular network.
Are GPS and Man Down included in each set?
This is confirmed separately for the proposed instances: you need the appropriate functions and settings, and for data transfer – system support.
Can I use a terminal without a base station?
In DMO, it is possible to directly connect compatible terminals with agreed settings. This mode does not guarantee communication with the control room through the infrastructure.
