Replacing MTP850 with MTP6550: planning a handheld TETRA fleet upgrade
When upgrading the MTP850 fleet, it is important to maintain the usual communication routine for employees. The MTP6550 can be considered as a replacement after validation of network variant and services. The transition starts with testing multiple terminals so that the purchasing decision is based on the operation of the equipment in your facility.

Start with the reasons for the replacement
It is useful to separate the problems of the apparatus and the problems of the system. Worn buttons, a weak battery and an uncomfortable headset refer to the terminal or its accessories. Call failures in a particular building may require a coverage survey. If you buy another model without this separation, some of the previous difficulties will remain.
Describe what functions employees use every day: main groups, individual calls, short messages and an emergency button. Requirements may differ for different departments. This list will form the basis of the MTP6550 test and will allow the replacement to be evaluated by performance rather than by the number of items in the booklet.
What to compare with the old and proposed terminal
| Comparison | Why is it important to purchase before |
|---|---|
| Full designation and range of MTP850 | One series name does not set the frequency variant of each old apparatus. |
| Proposed MTP6550 | Model documentation specifies 350-470 MHz; the marking and version of a particular product are verified |
| Registration and network services | The operator confirms the valid versions, subscriber rights and the necessary configuration |
| Accessories | Old batteries, headsets, cases and chargers are not transferred to the new kit without compatibility checks |
Keeping an existing group plan is often convenient for people, but moving it requires the work of an administrator. Settings from the old model are used as a description of the requirements, not as a file that can be necessarily written to the new device. Subscriber identifiers and individual parameters are prepared separately so that the terminals are correctly distinguished in the system.
Pilot: old and new close by
Choose employees with different routes: for example, bypassing the site, working inside the building and communication with transport. Check calls between MTP850, MTP6550, and dispatcher in both directions. Write down the place, the group used, the mode and the result. This log shows which problem is related to registration and which is related to radio coverage.
Separately check the individual call and the necessary messages. The emergency scenario is tested with a warning control room: the recipient is recorded, the indication and the termination of the alarm. If coordinates or Man Down are needed, the test involves the availability of these features and the acceptance of the event by the system, not just the appearance of the icon on the screen.
The DMO is checked separately from the TMO network mode. For direct communication, the agreed parameters of both types of terminals and the understanding of personnel actions are important. A successful group conversation through the base station does not yet confirm the readiness of a direct mode outside its zone.
How to organize the renewal of batches
After the accepted pilot, the order is made by divisions and condition of the equipment. Each batch is prepared according to a verified set of requirements, then individual settings and accessories are confirmed. Older machines are decommissioned after the acceptance of the corresponding new jobs, with an agreed reserve for the transition period.
The success of multiple terminals should not be automatically extended to the entire facility. The next batch may use other groups, premises or accessories. They retain the same test criteria and note the differences. This makes the phased replacement manageable without promising in advance the absence of any breaks.
What gives the buyer an accurate specification
The MTP6550 also refers to discontinued models. Its choice does not guarantee a new production cycle or the continued availability of spare parts. The proposal should agree on the state of the devices, the physical kit, the necessary options and possible maintenance.
When requesting, specify the versions of the old terminals, the number of jobs and the person responsible for coordinating with the network. The MTP6550 card below will help you fill in a need; the MTM5200 is useful for a separate vehicle-mounted portion of the fleet. The decision to replace is made after comparing these roles and test results.
Obtaining equipment
Specify the city of receipt: Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tyumen, Astana or another point of Russia and Kazakhstan. Delivery composition, available quantity, cost and terms are agreed for your order.
Questions before ordering
Is there enough overlap between TETRA and frequency range?
Nope. Registration and network services need to be coordinated, appropriate settings and a pilot check of the necessary scenarios.
Can we renovate the fleet in parts?
Yes, if old and new terminals are confirmed to work together. The order, reserve and withdrawal of old equipment will be agreed upon according to the results of the pilot.
Does the MTP6550 guarantee the availability of spare parts for years to come?
This guarantee is not provided in the model documentation. Production is discontinued, so maintenance and availability of accessories are discussed for a specific delivery.
