TETRA or DMR: choosing a system for group communications
The choice between TETRA and DMR begins with the workflow: who calls whom, where the shift takes place, and what the control room should receive. Both standards are used for professional communication, but the specific systems and terminals are different. Comparing the project and the necessary services, not the two names on the box.

First, check which system is already working.
When expanding an existing fleet, the network standard and its requirements for subscriber units matter. The handheld MTP6550 and vehicle-mounted MTM5200 use TETRA. Overlapping frequencies with DMR equipment do not allow direct replacement of DMR radios: their air interfaces and system operation differ.
If the network is just being designed, gather the number of users, work routes and simultaneous conversations. Determine which groups should interact, whether individual calls, messages, and a dispatching app are needed. Such requirements help you choose the architecture and estimate its cost for your object.
Network and direct modes solve different tasks
TETRA at TMO uses infrastructure to register and service calls. In DMO, compatible terminals can communicate directly on agreed parameters. So the claim that TETRA always requires a base station for any conversation is wrong. But direct mode does not automatically reproduce all network dispatching services.
DMR can also be reduced to two separate two-way radios. DMR Tier II provides direct and relay work, and Tier III refers to trunking systems. For comparison with the TETRA network, you need to choose a specific DMR layer and architecture, rather than assigning the capabilities of the simplest set to the entire standard.
Compare the requirements in one table
| Draft question | What to set for both options |
|---|---|
| Working area | Covering rooms, sites and routes with actual antennas and terminals |
| Group exchanges | Group composition, necessary simultaneous conversations and access rules |
| Controlling | Receiving calls, messages and coordinates; required applications and integration |
| Emergency scenarios | Recipient, priority, indication and confirmed event processing |
| Exploitation | Infrastructure, terminals, accessories, setup, maintenance and reserve |
The general name of the standard does not guarantee minimum delay, delivery of each call or maintenance of any number of employees. Check the required scenarios at the intended load. The size of the object and the number of subscribers help to plan the network, but are not the only criteria for choosing.
Groups and additional services
For transport and service services, a clear plan of groups is useful. Its implementation depends on the selected system, subscriber rights and configuration of terminals. Similarly, the presence of GPS in the hardware description does not mean that the coordinates are already available to the dispatcher: a configured transmission and a receiving application are required.
Protected services are considered for a specific project. Support for encryption in documentation does not mean free inclusion of all options or the readiness of an unknown instance to work on your system. The proposal separately confirms the necessary functions, software versions and the agreed order of configuration.
When to discuss MTP6550 and MTM5200
This pair is appropriate as a subject variant for a proven TETRA project: MTP6550 employee, MTM5200 machine. Each workplace has its own antenna, power supply and credentials. Common groups require registration and appropriate settings, and radio coverage is checked separately for handheld and vehicle-mounted installations.
The MTM5200 is not a built-in DMO/TMO gateway or DMO repeater. If an employee outside the network needs a bridge over the machine, such a requirement is included in the selection of a separate solution. Buying two terminals is not enough to fulfill this role.
How to make a decision on the results of the pilot
For the selected architecture, test on typical routes and in the right rooms. Check both-way conversations, group work, and necessary additional services. Record the conditions, failures and accepted restrictions, then compare the equipment composition and operating costs.
If the task is to buy terminals in the existing TETRA, below are direct cards MTP6550 and MTM5200. Report employee roles, network settings and kit requirements. The current condition and availability of the equipment are confirmed in the offer, and its compatibility is confirmed by testing and agreement with the operator.
Obtaining equipment
Specify the city of receipt: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Astana, Almaty or another point of Russia and Kazakhstan. Delivery composition, available quantity, cost and terms are agreed for your order.
Questions before ordering
Does TETRA always require a network to talk to?
Nope. TMO uses infrastructure, and DMO can directly link compatible terminals. The available services of these regimes vary.
Is DMR just a two-way radio connection?
Nope. Tier II provides direct and relay work, Tier III trunking. When choosing, you compare specific architectures and services.
Can you replace DMR-two-way radio with MTP6550 at the same frequency?
MTP6550 is the TETRA terminal. Frequency matching does not mean standard compatibility or registration in another system.
